My agent called and said he had an interview for me with this man who was casting a pilot film for a science fiction thing and there's this role for a running part. So I went and I met the man. As a matter of fact when I met Gene Roddenberry, I mispronounced his name. I called him "Mr. Rosenberry." And he mispronounced my name. He called me "Tack-I", which is not an uncommon mispronunciation. It's pronounced "Tack-eh" as you pronounced it, so we got started by mispronouncing each other's names. When he described the role to me, I knew that this was the role that I had to have. And I knew that there would be a lot of competition for it, so I was really nervous about it. And so after a stressful tense week, the phone rang again and my agent told me that I had the part, and the rest as they say, is history.

Both the strength and the weakness of American democracy is in the fact that it's a true people's democracy, and it can be as great as the people can be, but it's also as fallible as the people are.

Well, the original bridge set that we used for the TV series was donated to my alma mater, the theatre arts dept of UCLA. And they used it for a few student productions, but they considered it a used set for a show that's been cancelled, and they left it out in the sun. And then there was a rainstorm and it got drenched, and moisture soaked in, then the sun came out and the pieces began to parch, so it was destroyed. However, one worker there who also was a fan knew what it was, and I guess he wanted it because they were ignoring it. He took the captain's chair, and took it home. And, you know, it wasn't missed.

The real challenge in acting is in comedy. It's easier to get that gasp in a drama. Not easy, because you still have to find that emotional pitch. And when you do something in drama and you hear that sob from the audience it's so fulfilling. But as a comic actor, when the laugh is supposed to come and you punch in that line and nothing happens it is dreadful. It's horrific and you feel like dying right there.

I spent my boyhood behind the barbed wire fences of American internment camps and that part of my life is something that I wanted to share with more people.

I remember the barbed wire and the guard towers and the machine guns, but they became part of my normal landscape. What would be abnormal in normal times became my normality in camp.

It seems to me important for a country, for a nation to certainly know about its glorious achievements but also to know where its ideals failed, in order to keep that from happening again.

Well, you know, I do think in the larger span of things, I owe it all to Star Trek, because Star Trek has given me this pop icon status if you will, and one of the gifts have been this megaphone I have which amplifies my voice and I can reach people. And I do think the movement for equality for LGBT Americans is in the same context of all of the great American movements, you know, the basic fundamental ideals of this country of justice and equality.
